We’ve removed K9 from #grubbn. Why? The bot was overkill.
The channel is relatively small, and hardly every has trolls or spammers (though we do get normal members spamming…).
We have enough moderators to handle any problems.
However, things aren’t as they were before; we will be stepping up the rules in IRC, especially concerning spam.
A new bot, K9-bot, has been added to the #grubbn IRC channel. He is not interactive, unlike Grubbot and Loudbot (the two other bot regulars in #grubbn).
Written by Snova, it is an implementation of Robot 9000. The basic purpose is to prevent, and punish against, a user saying something that has already been said in the channel.
#grubbn has been set to moderation mode (+m), meaning that non-voiced users can not speak. The punishment for a user saying something already said is to devoice them for a period of time; the devoice length is increased by a factor is also increased by a factor of two for each time.
It is hoped that this will raise the quality of discussions in the channel.
The server was running exceptionally slow and disk i/o was thrashing quite a bit, so we had to reboot. I susepct the problem was some runaway MySQL processes.
If you had any services running, you will need to restart them if they aren’t set to do so on boot.
Thanks to the magic of VNC, you can now use a GUI to access your grubbN account.
Advanced notice: This is currently experimental, so it may be removed in the future, if it becomes a problem.
Anyways, to get started, create a .vnc directory in your home directory.
Start vnc server by typing ‘vncserver’. It should prompt you for a password. Give it one. This will be your password to login to the vncserver.
Now, kill the initial server it created, using vncserver -kill
ISPLAY
(Vncserver tells you the display when it starts, in this line:
“New ‘X’ desktop is grubbn.org:2″. “2″ is the DISPLAY.)
Next, you will need to choose a wm/de. grubbn has 5 window managers/desktop envirornments installed: Openbox, Fluxbox, LXDE, JWM and wmii(You may request another, but it must be lightweight. Gnome and KDE are out of the question).
To start it, edit your ~/.vnc/xstartup (it should’ve been automatically created when you ran VNC for the first time).
Comment out the last line (which should start the default X window manager), and put the startup script for your choice of wm/de. For LXDE, this is ‘lxsession’. For the rest, it is the name.
Now, run vncserver.
You should be able to connect using a VNC client. Set the address to grubbn.org:DISPLAY.

http://grubbn.org/mail is now working.
We now have custom subdomains for grubbn members with userpspaces (i.e. username.grubbn.org). These come automatically as part of the package when you get a userspace on our server.
If you need help getting yours working or want more info, just contact the admins and we’ll be glad to help.
We have a Wiki now. The focus of the Wiki is writing about grubbN. There’s a good chance anything off-topic will be deleted.
Established articles will also be locked.
I was bored today, so I fixed a bunch of shit that b0rked when we switched to Debian.
Among these (thus far):
- The Teeworlds server
- The Urban Terror server
- The Gobby server (public and private)
Note: Email grubbn@gmail.com if you’d like another service added/fixed.
We have a blog now. Mostly for news. Also mostly because I’m sick of maintaining this shit myself.
